| Hiroshima, Nagasaki survivors plead for abolition April 27, 2005 On Tuesday, May 3, 2005, the Fellowship of Reconciliation will host An Evening with the Hibakusha – the survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945. Three Hibakusha will present their personal stories, with Japanese-English translation provided by Mr. Hiro Sakurai, the United Nations representative from Sokka Gakkai International (the largest lay Buddhist organization in Japan and a leader in the global nuclear abolition movement.) "The survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings have suffered the most horrendous form of warfare in human history, and they have been a living witness for nuclear disarmament and world peace for 60 years," said Ibrahim Ramey, the coordinator of the FOR's disarmament program. "Their message to us is a clear and powerful one, and we must honor them while they are still with us". The Hibakusha and several other Japanese visitors are in New York to attend the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference. The program, at FOR’s headquarters (521 S. Broadway, Nyack, NY) will feature a video on the international Mayor's Campaign for Nuclear Abolition. FOR will also make a formal presentation to the Hibakusha guests. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. May 3 and is free and open to the public. However, space will be very limited. Persons from the Nyack community interested in attending should call Ibrahim Ramey (845-358-4601 X 34) immediately to reserve seats.
