The Fellowship of Reconciliation, begun in 1914, is an interfaith peace organization composed of women and men who have joined together to explore the power of love and truth for resolving human conflict. While it has always been vigorous in its opposition toward and nuclear weapons, the FOR has insisted equally that this effort must be based on a commitment to the achieving of a just and peaceful world community, with full dignity and freedom for every human being. Our mission is to replace violence, racism and economic injustice with nonviolence, peace, and justice.
Interfaith Peace-Builders is an FOR program focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was begun in November 2000, at the request of long-time FOR partners in Palestine and Israel, as a response to the Second Intifada. IFPB is a continuation of FOR involvement in the region dating back to 1975. IFPB seeks to influence U.S. policy in the region by sending interfaith delegations of U.S. citizens to the region to learn about the effects of the occupation on both Palestinians and Israelis, meet with and support the work of Palestinians and Israelis seeking a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict, hear a wide range of perspectives on the conflict, and engage in education, organizing, and lobbying efforts when the participants return. IFPB collaborates closely with partners in both Israel and Palestine, an FOR Middle East Task Force, and many U.S.-based organizations working to resolve the conflict. The most distinctive feature of IFPB is its emphasis on interfaith leadership and participation in its delegations and its commitment to working with both Palestinians and Israelis.

The intern organizes or assists in all aspects of program management and development, with primary responsibility for recruitment and itinerary development for each upcoming delegation. Measurable Projects
The IFPB program is a mix of work that simply goes on and never reaches a conclusion, and very specific delegation experiences. The ongoing projects are measured by monthly Work Plans for the whole program. Specific measurable projects for the intern are each of the 4 delegations that we project for the year. Each of the delegations will give us the opportunity to measure and assess our success. The assessment will be of the work of the intern, the Program Coordinator, and the Outreach Coordinator, since the collaborative nature of the program does not allow us to separate the work easily.
Terms of Employment:
Internship dates: August 2005 (or possibly earlier) through August 2006
Internship hours: 35+ hours per week
Compensation: Monthly living stipend: $650. Monthly high cost of living supplement: $200
Housing: Housing in the DC area is very expensive, but offers many opportunities for finding shared housing with other interns or grad students. We can provide temporary housing and assist the intern in finding shared housing. The cost (usually $400/month minimum) is partially covered by the high cost of living supplement and partially covered by the intern. There is the possibility of a low cost or free room in a local FOR member’s house with limited kitchen privileges.
Full health insurance coverage
Four weeks paid vacation
Note: Any program expenditures must be pre-approved by immediate supervisor
Affirmative Action: The FOR is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer that actively seeks inclusion of women, people of color, religious minorities, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered people throughout its staff and communities.
