Building Peaceful Resistance to the “Other War”:
A FOR Human Rights Delegation to Colombia, July 15-29

As the war in Iraq, now entering its third year, rivets our attention in the foreground, a far longer war of American intervention grinds on in the background. Four decades of conflict between armed actors in Colombia have led to the killing, displacement, and kidnapping of countless indigenous people, women, union activists, youth, journalists, and human rights workers. Despite Colombian government ties to paramilitary forces that are notorious for abuse, the U.S. continues to fund that government and fuel that war – over $740 million in 2006 alone, of which 80% is directed toward military and security efforts. Yet there are more than 40 courageous intentional peace communities in Colombia. They face violent pressure from both paramilitary and guerilla groups, and are regularly displaced by the Colombian armed forces and counter-guerilla police.

Join us in Colombia July 15-29, 2006, gain new insights into global affairs, and learn how you can support these key nonviolent actors.

Our permanent and expanding accompaniment work allows FOR to assemble a unique and rich experience. This delegation will meet with Indigenous, Afro-Colombian, youth, and women’s organizations, and Colombian and U.S. government officials; delegates will travel to the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó. You will develop a greater understanding of the “drug war,” the U.S. military intervention, and the growing peaceful resistance. $1,300 covers all ground expenses including translation, lodging, meals, in-country transportation, and qualified FOR delegation leaders. Airfare to Bogotá is additional. For more information or to register by May 15, call 415-495-6334 or e-mail Amanda Jack at amanda @ igc.org.
