A Blessing for Our Nation

We need a new kind of patriot

whose love of country embraces

all its shameful, bloody betrayals of the dream:

whose commitment takes cognizance

of the misery and the grandeur,

the perversity and the potential,

the sickness and the health.

 

We need patriot-prophets

whose Love is a flaming sword

and whose searing judgement

cauterizes the infected wounds

of our body politic.
