The
Fellowship of Reconciliation is proud to offer
a screening on August 7 of the US-Tanzanian
film Maangamizi – The Ancient One by
Ron Mulvihill and Martin Mhando. Filmed in
Tanzania with Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia,
Silence of the Lambs) as executive producer
and Leonard Kurz as co-producer, Maangamizi
is the powerful story of three women – an
African-American physician, her Tanzanian patient,
and the mysterious ancestor who guides them
on a deeply spiritual, psychologically fraught
journey toward self-knowledge.
Maangamizi, which is Swahili for "destroyer," seeks
to reclaim the connection between Africa and
her Diaspora and presents a compelling vision
of a single mankind. It dares to represent
the histories of two continents as it peels
away layers of pain and ultimately brings healing
of the soul. "It is more than a movie," said
author Alice Walker of the film. "It is
a look at how we've been torn at our roots;
severed from nourishment at the source ...
Those of us who can remember and honor who
we have been over eons of time, will be able
to inspire the whole world to greater heights
of compassion."
Produced by Gris-Gris Films and Forest Creatures
Entertainment, Maangamizi features an international
cast and crew. It's highly evocative score
is by Grammy award-winning composer Cyril Neville.
