Paula Larke has been called “absolutely
miraculous ... a group leader, motivator,
spirit-uplifter, singer, storyteller, and
artist extraordinaire...” (Leadership America) She
tells West and East African tales and personal
tales of celebration and loss, as well as
making music on bass, djembe, guitar, and
banjo. Her musical style is eclectic - reminiscent
of 60's Motown, Nina Simone's folk-blues,
songs and spirituals from the Georgia Sea
Islands, traditional Appalachian mountain
laments, and old-time Pentecostal call and
response, just to name a few.
Paula performs art
for social change with
humor, lyrical percussion, traditional
wit and wisdom, and contemporary irreverence. She
is a veteran of the Broadway, Off-Broadway,
and touring stages. For the last twenty-one
years, she has performed nationwide. Her
concert venues have included Riverside
Church in New York, the Kennedy Center
in DC, and numerous festivals throughout
the Southeast and Eastern seaboard. In
the words of one participant and fan: “Your
music reminded me that I come from a musical
culture and that it is a vital resource
for affecting change.” John McCutheon,
songwriter and musician Local 1000, American
Federation of Musicians, writes, “I
was knocked out by her witty, politically
incisive blend of music, poetry and storytelling. Paula
Larke is one of a kind. I just wish we
had a million more like her.”
Paula Larke is former artist-in-residence
at the famed Riverside Church in New York. she released
her most recent recording, “Precious
Gifts: Paula Larke and the Riverside Church
Family” in the fall of 2002.
