Ruth Hiller was born in the USA and came
to Israel when still in her teens. Naively
fascinated by the prospect of living in a Utopian
environment, she moved to Kibbutz Haogen, north
of Tel Aviv. She still lives there with Gary,
her lifetime partner, and their 6 children.
She is a long time peace activist and a founding
member of New Profile, The Movement to Civilize
Israeli Society, a feminist oriented grassroots
movement of women and men founded in 1998.
Her work in New Profile focuses on the demilitarization
of Israeli society, including changing the
present conscription laws and ending the
mandatory draft of young Jewish men and women.
. Two
of her sons have already refused to serve
and a third is preparing to do so. Her oldest
son,
Yinnon, was the first pacifist in Israel
to get an exemption from the military via an
appeal
to the High Court of Justice, though the
army released him at the last minute to avoid
establishing
a legal precedent. Ruth supported and guided
his six-year struggle with the military and
courts, and New Profile acted as her support
group, sounding board, and channel for fundraising.
Ruth has published several reflective pieces
on this process and on her involvement
in New Profile, in both English and Italian
venues.
She has represented New Profile before
the European Parliament and Belgian Senate
and
before peace and women's groups in Italy,
Germany,
and Belgium. She is a member of an international
dialogue group focusing on Peace and Gender
with other German, Palestinian and Israeli
women.
